Job Requirements

For appointment to this grade, a candidate must have:

   i.          Served in the grade of Senior Weights and Measures Officer for a minimum period of three 3 years;

  ii.          Bachelor’s Degree in any of the following disciplines: - Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, Computer Science, Law or Legal Metrology, Information Communication Technology, Instrumentation or an engineering degree in Mechanical, Electrical and Electronics, Microprocessors or equivalent qualification from a recognized institution;

OR

Diploma in any of the following disciplines: - Law, Instrumentation, Computer Science, Information Communication Technology (ICT), Metrology, Engineering (Mechanical /Electrical / Electronics) or equivalent qualification from a recognized institution;

iii.          Advanced certificate of the Institute of Trades Standards Administration (Kenya);

 iv.          Be a member of the institute of Traders Standards Administration (Kenya)

  v.          Certificate in computer applications from a recognized institution; and

 vi.          Shown merit and ability as reflected in work performance.

Job Description

Duties and responsibilities

   i.          Testing and stamping of mechanical and electronic weighing and measuring equipment, and class II mechanical and electronic scales used for pharmaceutical dispensing and jewelry trade;

  ii.          Sampling pre-packaged goods for quantitative analysis;

iii.          Testing of meters for water, milk other liquid foods and liquefied gas;

 iv.          Supervising and coordinating verification activities at stamping stations, testing automatic weight machines, bulk weighers and totalizing machines, bulk meters at oil depots;

  v.          Carrying our verification of weighing and measuring equipment used by local authorities and other government institutions to ensure accuracy,

 vi.          Analysis data collected on verified equipment at trader’s premises, stamping stations and verification office; and

vii.          Carrying out inspection on internal controls by the manufacturers and measuring systems, including software for data processing of measuring results.

Other duties will include:

  1. Attending and giving evidence in court during the prosecution of offences arising from infringement of the Weight Measures Act [Cap. 513], the Trade Descriptions Act [Cap. 505] and regulations made thereunder;
  2. Carrying out bi-annual comparison of working standards with Secondary Reference Standards; 
  3. Developing sampling schemes for checking pre-packages, and carrying out research in specific areas of legal metrology and consumer protection;
  4. Carrying out inspection on wholesale and retail trading premises on the use of weighing and measuring equipment; 
  5. Preparing publicity materials for trade fairs and exhibitions;
  6. Calibrating prover tanks and maintaining Secondary Reference Standards;
  7. Collecting and accounting for Appropriation-in-Aid (A.I.A); and
  8. Delivering lectures at traders’ courses requisitioning workshop tools and verification materials.
